The Commission on Presidential Debates held the first "modern" debate in 1948 during the Republican Primary. The debate pitted N.Y. Gov. Thomas Dewey against Harold Stassen, the former governor of Minnesota. It was an hour-long radio debate on a single topic: "Outlawing the Communist party in the U.S." This was the first and last presidential debate limited to a single issue.
